S.S. AMERICAN VICTORY
Tampa, Florida
Built in: 1945
HISTORY
The world-class SS American Victory was built in 55 days and was delivered to the U.S. War Shipping Administration by the California Shipbuilding Yard on May 24, 1945. After serving in WWII, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the ship went through a $2.5 million restoration in June 1985. In October, 1996, Captain John C. Timmel learned the SS American Victory was earmarked for scrap if not acquired for memorial purposes. Feeling that a museum would be feasible in Tampa, FL and that it would act as a purveyor or maritime memories, the ship was towed from Virginia to its permanent location in the Channelside District in downtown Tampa. Currently, the SS American Victory is only one of 3 fully-functioning ships in the country.
RUMORS
We were called to this location by claims of paranormal activity and ghostly apparitions. Many who worked there stated that the location has eerie energy and their experiences were
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The ship is utterly massive and magestic, to be able to explore its inner chambers was an explorer’s dream come true. To do so late at night with no one there was an phenomenal experience that we will never forget. It allows you to experience how the personnel on this ship lived. From their sleeping areas, eating areas, and work areas. The tight quarters, cool temperature interior, and solid metal structures leaves you in awe as you traverse within. To be in the belly of this beast was an experience that mere words cannot define. To be within those chambers in the dark makes you come alive to the sights and sounds experienced.
THE CONCLUSION
Where as having a ship marked off the bucket list is truly a phenomenal experience. I will say that it lacked the activity that was claimed to reside within. Even though we did hear noiss here and there, it is an old ship which is bound to make noises. We did not catch any evps to validate a haunting.
